SR 30THX : Full range, multi-pattern, on-wall surround

SR 30THX   |   $0

Multichannel home systems have transformed the way we watch movies and, now, listen to music.

To take full advantage of today’s digital 5.1-channel sources, the surround speakers must now perform on a par with the speakers up front. But, can a single design anticipate all the past and present surround modes, placement criteria, and user preferences? The Snell SR 30 can and does!

There is an ongoing debate regarding surround speakers that revolve around diffuse-field versus direct radiators; generally speaking, the first are considered better at ambience re-creation, while the second are superior at localizing the surround effects. Just as important, the placement location of the speakers can radically change the quality of diffuse and direct designs.

As a result, the Snell SR 30 is conveniently configurable to either system, with a difference. Snell’s unique SR 30 ”Diffuse” mode promotes organic, room filling ambience, with a diffuse soundfield considerably wider than conventional dipolar surround speakers; the SR 30’s ”Direct” setting produces an even, focused, direct-radiating surround that extends the digital 5.1-channel’s tonal accuracy and dimensional impact throughout the listening room. Choose the pattern that sounds best with your room, furnishings, and software; should things change, flip the switch. Most of us are constrained by the decor or the architectural features of the room, the ”Diffuse/Direct” switch selects a pattern to account for placement considerations. Moreover, the SR 30 can easily be configured to play extra channels without adding extra speakers. This provides ideal compatibility with the several superb 7.1-channel surround processors already available, as well as similar designs expected in the near future. Snell’s unique six-driver array enables the SR 30’s flexible configuration and impressive performance. A total of three 1-inch aluminum-dome tweeters combine with dual, high-output 3.5-inch copolymer midrange units that are ”matrix-arrayed” in an open truss frame rather than mounted on a conventional baffle. These five drivers interact in complex, computer-derived crossover/phase relationships for the SR 30’s ”Diffuse” and ”Direct” modes. No less important, the SR 30’s dual voice-coil, 6.5-inch, long-throw woofer features unusually powerful, low-bass output that extends well below the Dolby ® Digital/DTS ® 80Hz crossover point, the exception rather than the rule among even many ”high-end” surrounds.
